The Shakers where an American religious cult founded in the 1700’s by the Englishman Ann Lee. The Shaker communities don’t exist anymore, but their unique furniture and craftsmanship has been persevered. The Shaker villages existed until the 1990’s and today function as museums. The community of Shaker focused on cleanliness and simplicity and preached this to God by having a thorough cleaning routine around the home. The Shaker accessories, which where an important part of the Shakers need for perfect order where mainly crafted from cherry wood. The Shakers lived by strict rules, one of them dictating “Don’t lay it down, put it away.” Nowadays, Shaker accessories are still being produced by the original drawings and methods. The Shaker design is over 200 years old and is still relevant as of today – clean lines and simple design is timeless.
